Stop opening the lid if the casing separates
If a corner lifts, a cracking sound appears or the bezel moves as the lid opens, leave the laptop at a safe angle and avoid cycling it. Repeated movement can tear more mounting points or pinch the display and antenna cables routed through the hinge area.
Do not squeeze the corner shut or add glue from the outside. Adhesive in the wrong place can obstruct proper disassembly and does not correct an over-tight hinge.
The hinge, the mount or both?
- Lid feels unusually stiff
- The hinge mechanism may be binding and transferring excess force into the case.
- Base opens near one corner
- Bottom-case or palm-rest mounting points may have separated.
- Back of the screen lifts
- Lid-side mounts or the display cover may be damaged.
- Screen flickers while moving
- The nearby display cable may already be affected and needs checking.
What a proper hinge assessment includes
- Inspect both hinges, not only the side showing visible damage.
- Identify which structural mounting points have failed in the lid, palm rest or base.
- Check the display cable, Wi-Fi antenna routing and bezel around the damaged area.
- Assess hinge resistance and alignment before selecting a repair approach.
- Open and close the reassembled laptop carefully to verify even movement and screen operation.
What changes the repair method and cost
Cost depends on whether the hinge itself is damaged, which case section holds the broken mounts, how much material remains around them, and whether the lid, bezel, display cable or panel has also been affected. Some designs require a larger case assembly rather than an isolated bracket.
Photos help with an initial conversation, but hidden mount damage is only clear after careful opening. A cosmetic crack and a structural failure are not priced or repaired the same way.
How to move a laptop with a broken hinge
- Shut it only if the lid moves without forcing or separating the case.
- Support the base and lid together; never carry it by the screen.
- Use a rigid, padded sleeve and keep the charger separate.
- Mention if the display now flickers, shows lines or loses Wi-Fi signal.
