What happens when you connect the charger?
- No charging light
- The adapter, cable, connector or input-power circuit may not be delivering power.
- Works at one cable angle
- Stop forcing it; the plug, port or its mounting may be worn or loose.
- Connected, percentage not rising
- Battery condition, charger capacity or the charging circuit needs checking.
- USB-C warning or slow charger message
- The charger may not support the voltage, wattage or USB Power Delivery profile the laptop expects.
Why the adapter must be checked first
A charger can show the correct voltage without behaving properly under load. Cable breaks near the plug, an incorrect wattage, a damaged identification pin or an incompatible USB-C charger can all produce confusing symptoms.
For barrel connectors, matching the plug is not enough; voltage, polarity and wattage matter. For USB-C, a phone charger may physically fit yet be unable to negotiate the power the laptop requires.
The charging diagnostic path
- Inspect the adapter, cable and connector for heat, cuts, bending or looseness.
- Check charger output and recognition with the laptop connected.
- Inspect the DC jack or USB-C port and how it is mounted to the board or cable assembly.
- Check battery detection and charging behaviour.
- Investigate the internal power circuit only after external causes are excluded.
Repair options and cost factors
The cost depends on whether the fault is the adapter, a cable-mounted jack, a soldered port, the battery, or components in the power circuit. USB-C ports can also carry data and display signals, which makes their construction and testing different from a simple barrel jack.
The exact laptop model, charger type, damage around the connector and part availability are needed before a useful estimate can be given.
Avoid turning an intermittent fault into board damage
- Do not wedge the cable or keep twisting it until the light appears.
- Stop using a connector that sparks, smells burnt or becomes unusually hot.
- Do not test with an unverified higher-voltage adapter.
- Bring every charger you have tried so the results are not confused.
