If liquid reached the keyboard, switch the laptop off
Disconnect the charger, shut the machine down and do not keep pressing keys to see whether they recover. Liquid can travel below the keyboard toward the board, and powering the laptop can turn residue into corrosion or an electrical fault.
Do not use a hair dryer or place the laptop in rice. Tell us what was spilled, roughly how much and when it happened; plain water and a sugary drink leave very different residues.
The pattern of failed keys is useful evidence
- One loose or missing keycap
- The cap, scissor mechanism or mounting points may be damaged while the keyboard circuit still works.
- A row or group is dead
- A keyboard matrix or ribbon-connection issue is possible.
- Keys type twice
- Contamination, wear or software repeat settings may be involved.
- Built-in keyboard fails, USB keyboard works
- This narrows the problem toward the internal keyboard path but is not a final diagnosis.
Keyboard checking: software before parts
- Test the affected keys consistently and note the keyboard layout.
- Compare behaviour before and after the operating system loads when possible.
- Inspect the ribbon connection, signs of contamination and physical key damage.
- Identify whether the keyboard is a separate part or integrated into the top case.
- Discuss the sensible repair or replacement route based on the findings.
Why keyboard construction changes the cost
Some keyboards release as a separate module. Others are fixed into the palm-rest assembly with many plastic points, and some backlit models have additional layers and cables. The exact layout, language, backlight, top-case construction, part availability and liquid damage all affect the work and cost.
Replacing a single keycap is only sensible when the underlying mechanism and mounting points are intact. Gluing a key down often creates a larger problem and can make proper replacement harder.
