A large number of laptops that feel unusably slow are not short of processing power. They are held back by a mechanical hard disk that was designed years ago for a lighter operating system.
The practical difference
A hard disk drive stores data on spinning platters read by a moving head. A solid state drive has no moving parts, so reading small scattered files is dramatically faster. Booting, opening applications and switching between programs are exactly the tasks that depend on this.
Signs that storage is the bottleneck
- Boot takes several minutes even though the laptop has enough RAM
- The disk indicator light stays on almost continuously
- The laptop is responsive one moment and frozen the next
- Copying files is slow and produces a faint clicking sound
When RAM matters more than storage
If the laptop already has an SSD but slows down with several applications open, memory may be the limiting factor instead. Both can be checked; upgrading the wrong one gives disappointing results.
What decides whether an upgrade is possible
This is model specific, so the brand and exact model number are the first things to share when you make an upgrade enquiry.
- Whether the laptop uses a 2.5 inch drive bay, an M.2 slot or both
- Whether memory is socketed or soldered to the board
- The maximum memory supported by the board
- The overall condition and age of the laptop
Before any storage change
Back up anything important first. Storage work involves the drive that holds your data, so a copy on an external disk or a cloud account is a sensible precaution regardless of who does the work.
