When I work on laptops, one problem comes up repeatedly: the storage drive is full, but the owner cannot see what is taking the space. Large personal files are only one possibility. Application caches, old installers, duplicate files, development data and forgotten downloads can also build up quietly.
I compared several free disk-cleanup and storage-analysis tools while looking for an option I could recommend to clients. After trying MangoDisk, its review-before-cleaning approach and open-source code made it worth a closer look.
What is MangoDisk?
MangoDisk is a free, open-source application for disk cleanup, storage analysis and system maintenance on Windows and macOS. The project is published under the GPL-3.0 licence, and its source code is available in the MangoDisk GitHub repository.
Its current feature set includes:
- Deep Cleanup for caches, temporary data and rebuildable project files
- Large File Cleanup and disk-space analysis
- Exact duplicate-file detection
- Application uninstall and related-file cleanup
- Startup item management
- System optimization and maintenance tools
- Operation History for reviewing cleanup and system changes
Why the review step matters
MangoDisk scans in read-only mode by default. It shows file names, locations, sizes and risk information before a cleanup action is confirmed. Scanning a drive and deleting from it are deliberately separate steps.
That distinction matters on a client's computer. Recovering the maximum number of gigabytes is not useful if an important file, application setting or work folder disappears in the process.
The two MangoDisk features I found most useful
1. Deep Cleanup
Deep Cleanup is useful when a drive is almost full but the cause is not obvious. It brings potentially cleanable content from different locations into one result instead of making you inspect each folder manually.
The scan can cover system and user caches, application and browser data, developer-tool downloads, container caches, project build artefacts, local AI models and other rebuildable data. Results still need judgment. A project dependency folder may be rebuildable, for example, but deleting it just before offline work would be inconvenient.
2. System Optimization and Operation History
The System Optimization area provides built-in adjustments for performance, privacy and everyday Windows behaviour. MangoDisk says these are validated settings rather than arbitrary registry paths, terminal commands or scripts.
Operation History records what each cleanup or system change did and whether it succeeded. I prefer this to a vague 'Optimize Now' button because there is a record to review if the computer behaves differently afterward.
Why MangoDisk stood out from a typical cleaner
The project is open source
Anyone can inspect the code, review the cleanup-rule library, report an issue or contribute a change. Open source does not automatically make an application safe, but it does make the project's implementation and revision history available for scrutiny.
Safety is part of the workflow
The application does not automatically delete files during a normal scan. Users can review selections and estimated reclaimable space before applying a cleanup. MangoDisk also documents safety boundaries and validation for its cleanup rules and system optimizations.
It supports Windows and macOS
The same project supports 64-bit Windows 10 or later and macOS Monterey 12.5 or later. Individual maintenance or optimization options may differ by operating system, but the storage-analysis and cleanup approach is available on both platforms.
It is more than a junk-file remover
Large-file analysis, duplicate detection, application cleanup, startup management, system optimization and maintenance make MangoDisk closer to a computer-maintenance toolkit than a single-purpose cache cleaner.
Before installing or cleaning anything
Download the application from the official MangoDisk website or its official GitHub releases. Avoid repackaged installers from download portals.
- Keep a current backup of documents, photos and project files.
- Review every selected path instead of accepting the largest suggested cleanup automatically.
- Be careful with permanent deletion and application-uninstall actions because they may not be reversible.
- Understand a system or startup setting before changing it; some adjustments can affect privacy, security, battery life or update behaviour.
- Do not use cleanup software as a substitute for checking a drive that is clicking, disappearing, reporting errors or corrupting files.
The feature I suggested: Smart Download Folder Optimizer
The Downloads folder is often where storage and organisation problems meet. It gradually fills with old installers, ZIP archives, screenshots, duplicate documents, temporary files and several versions of the same report.

Project-aware organisation
If a filename or document clearly contains a client and project reference, the application could suggest a suitable destination. A file such as 'XYZ_Q3_Report_Final.pdf' might be proposed for 'Clients/XYZ/Q3 Reports', but nothing would move until the user approved it.
Temporary-download review
Old installers, archives and one-time downloads could be presented with simple choices such as Keep, Archive, Move or Delete. The age of a file can inform a recommendation, but it should never be treated as proof that the file is useless.
Duplicate and version grouping
Files named 'report.pdf', 'report (1).pdf' and 'report-final-v2.pdf' may be related without being exact duplicates. Grouping likely versions would let the user compare them instead of letting software decide that only the newest filename matters.
What MangoDisk provides today
Smart Download Folder Optimizer is my proposal, not a current MangoDisk feature. Issue #41 remains open as an enhancement. The maintainer confirmed that MangoDisk already scans Downloads for large files and exact duplicates and may consider a smaller, on-demand Downloads review with explicit confirmation before anything is moved or deleted.
Why a recommendation-first Downloads tool could help
A Downloads organiser should not quietly rearrange or delete files. An old ZIP may contain an installer that is difficult to find again. A document called 'final.pdf' may not be the approved version. A file that has not been opened recently may still be needed for tax, warranty or client records.
Recommendations preserve control. The software can explain why a file looks temporary or related to another file, while the person who understands its real purpose makes the final decision.
Is MangoDisk worth trying?
MangoDisk is worth evaluating if you want a no-cost, open-source way to understand disk usage before deciding what to remove. Its strongest point is not that it promises to clean everything. It gives you analysis and a confirmation step before changes are made.
It may suit someone looking for:
- A visual disk-space analyser
- Large-file and exact-duplicate detection
- Cache and temporary-file cleanup
- Application and startup management
- System optimization and maintenance tools
- Windows and macOS support
- An open-source project with visible code and issue tracking
When disk cleanup is not the complete answer
A full drive does not always mean that you need a larger SSD immediately. First identify what is using the space. If the laptop is healthy and most storage is occupied by files you genuinely need, an SSD upgrade may make more sense than repeated cleanup.
If the drive clicks, disappears, becomes extremely slow, reports health errors or causes files to become unreadable, stop treating the problem as routine cleanup. Back up what you can and arrange a laptop storage diagnosis in Ahmedabad before writing more data to the drive.
Why I am sharing this as a laptop repair technician
I found MangoDisk while looking for a free tool that could help clients understand storage problems. After exploring its cleanup, optimization and history features, I considered it useful enough to share and to engage with the project through a feature proposal.
That does not mean every suggested item should be deleted or every optimization should be applied. The sensible workflow remains the same: inspect, understand, back up and then make a deliberate change.
Final thoughts
MangoDisk combines storage analysis, cleanup, system tools and visible operation history in one open-source application. For me, the review-before-cleaning approach is the part that makes it recommendable.
If you try it, begin with a scan. Open the largest results, check their locations and remove only what you understand. A cleanup tool should help you make a better decision, not make every decision for you.
