What Information Should You Give a Laptop Repair Technician?

By Manan Laptop RepairingPublished Updated 4 min read

Most repair enquiries begin with a sentence like 'my laptop is not working'. Adding four or five specific details turns that into something a technician can actually act on.

Start with the machine

  • Brand and exact model number
  • Approximate age
  • Operating system, if you know it
  • Any hardware that was added or changed earlier

Describe the symptom, not the diagnosis

It is more helpful to say 'the screen goes black after about ten minutes and the fan keeps running' than to say 'I think the motherboard is gone'. Describing what you observe keeps the checking open rather than pointing it in one direction from the start.

Explain the timeline

Did the problem appear suddenly or build up over weeks? Does it happen every time or occasionally? Intermittent faults are harder to reproduce, so anything that helps trigger them is valuable information.

Mention anything unusual, even if it feels minor

  • A drop, knock or pressure on the lid
  • Liquid contact of any kind
  • A power cut or voltage fluctuation while charging
  • Use of a different charger
  • A recent update or newly installed software

Say what matters most to you

If recovering your data is the priority, state that first. If the laptop is needed for work or exams, mention it so the situation is understood correctly.
