Laptop Charging Problems: Adapter, Battery or Charging Port?

By Manan Laptop RepairingPublished Updated 5 min read

When a laptop stops charging, three things are commonly involved: the adapter and cable, the charging port, and the battery along with its charging circuit. The behaviour you observe helps narrow this down.

Charging only at a certain angle

If the laptop charges when the cable is held in a particular position, the connector or the port is the first suspect. Continuing to use it in that position tends to make the problem worse.

Plugged in but not charging

If the system reports that power is connected while the percentage does not rise, the adapter is likely delivering power and the issue sits with the battery or the charging circuit.

No response at all

No lights and no fan movement can mean the adapter is not delivering power. Check the adapter's own indicator, try another socket and inspect the cable for sharp bends near either end.

Heat and physical signs

Any of these should be treated as a reason to stop using the setup until it is checked.

  • An adapter that becomes unusually hot
  • A loose or recessed charging port
  • Burn marks or a smell near the connector
  • A frayed cable near the plug

What to send for checking

Send the adapter along with the laptop. Testing charging behaviour without the adapter you actually use gives an incomplete picture.
